Service Learning Trips (SLTs) are a great way to get involved with the MEDLIFE movement abroad!
Each trip is about a week long and takes place in areas such as Lima, Cusco, Riobamba, and even Kilimanjaro, where MEDLIFE International has worked to develop neighboring communities and to provide students across the globe with the opportunity to contribute to this support. In each trip, the first day is dedicated to going on a reality tour where students learn more about the situations and problems that the residents of the local communities have to face. The next 3-4 days are when students visit different communities to set up a mobile clinic and work with the wonderful MEDLIFE nurses and doctors to attend to the community members. Each mobile clinic has 6-7 different stations, including triage, dental, general medicine, pharmacy, education, tooth-brushing, and OBGYN, and students are randomly organized into groups to participate in two stations per day. For the next 1-2 days, students work on a developmental project, which ranges from building a staircase to planting a garden. Students spend the remaining days going on tours and exploring the new culture!
Due to COVID-19, our Service Learning Trip will be conducted Virtually. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have questions about the logistics.
Each student must pay $990 to cover the hostel stay, meals for five days, and supplies to support the clinics and the projects. The airfare will be based on the location and the time of booking (the earlier, the cheaper). Travel insurance must also be purchased with airfare (about $100). In addition, each student will have to pay for separate excursions (tours, etc) and the excursions will be determined ahead of time to better account for each student's financing. Each student must also plan to bring about $200 USD for meals on the weekends, snacks, and souvenirs. To reduce the costs, students can fundraise for themselves through GoFundMe or the 95:5 campaign that MEDLIFE International offers after signing up for the trip. There will also be fundraising events hosted by MEDLIFE NoVA and based on the number of hours each student works to fundraise in these events, points will be assigned to each student. After a student has accumulated a certain number of points, then he/she would be able to receive financial aid for the trip. A student may choose to donate the money they gained in financial aid to MEDLIFE International.
Parents/guardians of students are more than welcome to chaperone for these trips. Chaperones need to be at least 25 years old and a fingerprinting/background check must be done for each chaperone and sent to MEDLIFE Northern VA (more details upon request). The payment plan is the same for the chaperones as it is for the students ($990 + airfare/travel insurance + excursions + extra spending money). All parent chaperones will automatically qualify for receiving financial aid. The parent chaperones may choose whether or not they would like to participate in the clinic and project activities.
